The characteristic design of the coffee maker is from the German chemist and inventor Peter Schlumbohm, who published the patent in 1941. In 1958, designers at the Illinois Institute of Technology decided that this coffee maker was one of the best designs of modern times.

Each Chemex glass decanter features a polished wood collar and leather band hand-laid in Pittsfield, USA.

It uses thick paper filters specially designed by Chemex that are discarded once extraction is complete.
